Motorway density 6 times higher in the EU than in the CEC countries

The length of the motorway network in the EU grew by more than 25% between 1990 and 1999 to total nearly 50 000 km in 1999. As for the length of the rail network, it contracted by 4% in the 1990s and by 1999 was just under 154 000 km.

Motorway density1 in the EU in 1999 was six times higher than the average observed in the Central European candidate countries (CEC)2. On the other hand, the density of the rail network was a quarter less. This information comes from a report3 on the development of transport infrastructure in Europe published today by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg.

É como repara (e bem) o MC. Entre 1990 e 1999, fomos o país da UE27 (mais Suíça e Noruega) com maior crescimento de auto-estradas (cresceu 4 vezes) e maior decréscimo de ferrovia (menos 22 por cento).

Não sei se estes números descreverão de forma fidedigna a redução do caminho-de-ferro em Portugal, visto o encerramento de ferrovia ter ocorrido principalmente nos anos 80 , mas não deixa de ser preocupante. Há que também entender que éramos dos países com menos autoestradas em 1990. O que não desculpa a tendência, positiva e negativa.
